Marriage Pays?!

Feb 8, 2011   //   by Laura   //   Blended Family, Children, Communication, Dating, Marriage and Church, Marriage in the Media, Romance  //  Comments Off

Did you know that being married makes you happier and richer? I know, hard to believe when you are paying bills or arguing with your spouse!

“Marriage pays,” says National Marriage Week USA executive director Sheila Weber. “Research shows that marriage makes people happier, live longer, and build more economic security. Children with married parents perform better in school; have less trouble with the law, less teen pregnancy and fewer issues with addiction.”

If you are married and committed to staying married no matter the circumstances, you are going to be better off! The problem is that some married people, when ecountering problems in their marriage, think that they will be better off without their spouse and their children will be better off if mom and dad split up. FALSE! Don’t just take our word for it read the study.

February 7-14 is National Marriage Week USA. A week devoted to promoting marriage. “We want to get the message out that marriage is beneficial for both personal and national economic stability and for raising more well adjusted children,” says Chuck Stetson, CEO of National Marriage Week USA. In these days of economic hardship, policy leaders and individual Americans need to get serious about our efforts to strengthen marriage.”

Our encouragement to you this week, and every week, is to ask your self ,” What am I doing for my marriage today?” With your spouse, ask, ” What are we doing to strengthen our marriage on a regular basis?” Are you having regular dates? Are you involved in a Marriage Class or Small Group? Are you reading books that will help you better understand your spouse? Are you getting away just the two of you for some alone time? Take some time this week, National Marriage Week, and get eye to eye with your loved one and make a commitment in 2011 to strengthen your marriage. You will be happier and richer if you do!

Preparing for the STORM

We have a winter storm bearing down on us here in Michigan…could get up to a foot of snow. People are making preparations, going to the grocery store, getting extra supplies in case we’re snowed in for a couple of days. I (Jay) am even contemplating leaving a day early for a speaking engagement just to get out ahead of the wicked weather.

So have you ever thought of making preparations for the storms of marriage? We all know they are going to come and often they take us by surprise. Job lose, illness, death in the family can all represent “storms” we have to weather. So what’s your storm plan?

For us we really try to keep things simple. We can only keep things simple when we have our priorities in line. Our priorities are based on our Family Mission Statement. When the storms hit we will talk the situation through keeping our mission statement in mind. Having the Mission Statement allows us to “keep the main thing the main thing”.

Find out in our book Make Love Everyday just how to create your Family Mission Statement and be prepared for your next storm.

Blessings~
